Overview

Family violence and homelessness in Australia are currently inextricably linked. Family violence is the main reason why people, mainly women and children, seek assistance for homelessness. A woman’s ability to maintain housing when escaping family violence is limited by her access to financial and social resources, which can often be an aspect of abuse from a controlling partner. Women who escape a violent relationship often do so to become homeless.  The emotional and financial cost of leaving their homes, including their communities, is significant.

But what if there was a way to help women keep their existing housing while still escape family violence?

Hear from two charities that are working to keep women and children escaping family violence housed. McAuley’s Safe at Home program avoids homelessness by supporting victim-survivors to stay in their own home while providing alternative accommodation options and tailored support for the person using family violence. Justice Connect is working to use new rental laws to provide better legal options for women facing family violence to stay safely housed and avoid financial loss.

Join us to celebrate International Women’s Day and see how philanthropy is funding innovation to keep women and children safe and housed.
