Overview

A practical guide to engaging with government to secure funding or achieve policy reform.

In the charity and philanthropic sectors, we have many ideas for policy reform, or may need to seek funding to continue or expand our work, but engaging government and securing support can be challenging. This event provides practical strategies for engaging with government effectively, drawing on real world examples. It provides a strategic framework for government engagement, covering:

• The avenues of influence - understanding where power lies: This section discusses engaging with government departments, advisers, Ministers, the PM's portfolio, Cabinet, navigating the Budget process, galvanizing the backbench, using media, and third party influencing. 
• The mechanisms of influence: having a coordinated strategy, personalised engagement, developing proposals, briefing with influence, and how to engage effectively in meetings with government.
• How to build organisational capability in government relations: This covers the staffing, structures, influencers and capabilities organisations need to effectively engage government.

Presenter

Sam Rosevear -  Executive Director, Policy, Government Relations and Research at Philanthropy Australia

Sam has nearly 30 years’ experience influencing governments to adopt policy reforms, or provide funding to support the crucial work of charities.

He’s influenced government from the outside, as a senior executive at Philanthropy Australia, headspace, Beyond Blue, Teach For Australia and the University of Melbourne.

He’s influenced from within government, as a Deputy Secretary in the Victorian Government, and over 15 years in the Federal Government in organisations such as Treasury, Finance and Prime Minister and Cabinet.
